Relevant Skills and Dispute Resolution Experience
Allan W Wood has over 40 years engineering experience in the construction industry and is engaged full-time as an independent consultant in construction contract, arbitration, adjudication, conciliation, and Expert Determination matters. He has also lectured in-house and abroad on law and construction contracts.
He is a professionally trained chartered civil engineer who has attained fellowship status within the Institution of Civil Engineers and has a wide engineering background. He is also a Chartered Arbitrator and an unregistered Barrister (called in March 1996).
Included on the List of Arbitrators of the ICE and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Adjudication Panels of the ICE, CIArb, RICS, RIBA, CPA, IChemE and the CIC and the Institution of Civil Engineers List of Conciliators, Allan has acted as Arbitrator, Adjudicator and Conciliator on numerous occasions. He has also acted several times as an Expert Determinator, as an agreed mediator, as a DRB Member and as an Independent Neutral Evaluator.
After obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering in 1977, Allan worked for South Yorkshire County Council in Barnsley for one year, in their traffic management and road safety section, before moving to Blackpool Borough Council in 1978. During the period between 1978 and 1989 he was engaged as a designer/specifier and Resident Engineer on a variety of major construction projects including coast protection works, a medium length sea outfall and associated underground pumping station works and ancillary structures, airport runway construction to international standards, large open area car parking works, as well as general highway/drainage and municipal engineering works. Allan has gained a wide breadth of experience in many aspects of construction.
In 1989 he joined James R Knowles and acted for numerous civil engineering, building and process Contractors and Sub-contractors and also for major Employers in providing construction contract advice and managing arbitration and adjudication proceedings. He also acted as Expert in technical and quantum matters on construction matters and has given evidence in court on three occasions.
In July 2001, Allan became an independent consultant and is the Managing Director of Allan W Wood Limited. Allan now primarily acts as Arbitrator, Adjudicator and Conciliator, and as Expert Determinator and DRB member in construction matters.
Allan previously lectured in ICE Law and Contract Procedure at Bolton Institute for many years and was an examiner for the ICE Law & Contract Procedure paper and a member of the ICE's Dispute Resolution Panel.
